So every week Rae from the Bookmark Chronicles poses a bookish question. If you want to check out the challenge click the link. I plan on posting one every Thursday.
THIS WEEK IS: Having some of the middle chapters of a novel missing Or Missing the first and last chapters?
Obviously you should never be missing chapters of a book, the idea of missing any chapters is horrible. If I had to pick though, I’d go with missing the first and last chapters. The middle of the story is where the meat is. It’s where we see conflict, character development, and relationships play out. The middle is where I start to fall in love and grow attached to the characters.
If the author has written the story well and in the way it needs to be written, you should be able to guess what comes before and after just based on the middle and the characters. In my creative writing classes I’ve often had professors say an ending should be surprising but inevitable.
Let me know your answer to this Thursday’s this or that in the comments!
